Ed Maurer, Publisher, Florida Fly Fishing Magazine

After retiring from the US Air Force in 1995 I was headed back home to Florida with a goal in mind: publish a magazine about fly fishing in my home state. Even before I left Cheyenne, Wyoming it had a name, Florida Fly Fishing Magazine, and three pillars I wanted it built upon:
1. Only Florida
2. Only Fly Fishing
3. Have a female staff writer

My education was in print publishing and I had my heart set on a slick little paper magazine of about 64 pages or so. The only problem was that the costs for publishing print publications were through the roof and I didn't have pockets deep enough for the magazine.

Cast forward to 2009 and Internet magazines were becoming an accepted form and I had learned something about creating them, which meant I could at last publish my magazine.
And here we are.

Florida Fly Fishing Magazine is gaining popularity among readers and gaining the attention of the industry. We are read on every continent with the exception of Antarctica (we even have a reader in Iceland) and have a gifted staff of Contributing Editors to include Stuart Patterson, Ken Morrow, Joe Mahler, Aaron Adams, Robert Morselli and Jeannie McGuire.
Florida Fly Fishing Magazine publishes freshwater and saltwater articles and features about Florida fly fishing. Following the adage, "Fish where the fish are," this is where readers find the best articles only about fly fishing in the Sunshine State in one, convenient place.

SegelsonEver wonder what happens to your tarpon after you catch and release it? Where does it go? Did it survive? Will I catch it again?

Did you ever wonder if you were allowed to take that photo without a tarpon tag? Does the $50 spent on a tarpon tag actually go toward learning about tarpon?

Have you asked yourself...When I am fishing does it matter what kind of hook I use or the type of bait I choose to catch a tarpon? Are flies a good safe bet? Do I have any control over the fate of my tarpon when I release it? Am I stressing out the tarpon during the fight or just myself? How do I know the tarpon is ready to be released? How do I make sure my tarpon has a fighting chance to be caught again another day?

To learn the answers the these questions and more about the amazing biology of this species, plan to attend her seminar. He began tying saltwater flies in the early 1980's. Mel's favorite flies to tie are for snook and tarpon and you can see the details in the finish of those flies. He has taught fly tying at numerous fly shops and is a Whiting Pro Tier.
